Hello Everyone,
I am suggesting that DRY ICE shipments be packed with MORE DRY ICE.

How Much Dry Ice should you use?

   - 5 to 8lbs minimum. - If you don't have a scale guess high.
   - 10lbs minimum in hot weather.
   - Dry Ice sublimates at 5-10lbs per 24 hours in a standard 2in wall
   styrofoam shipper. (At 70°F ambient temp.)
   - Ambient temperature at 90°F will accelerate sublimation to 10-15lbs
   per 24hrs.
   - FedEx trucks and facilities are not temperature controlled. (In summer
   the FedEx truck is well over 100°F.)
   - Travel time is 18 hours normally.
   - Any unforeseen circumstances will  ADD 24 HOURS.
   - Weather affecting Memphis Tennessee, the FedEx Hub, has impacted
   several UCR shipments.

Preparation:

   - In hot weather use even more dry ice.
   - Use one piece of tape across the styrofoam to keep the seal closed.
   - Use a thicker-wall container if necessary.
   - Limit air space in the styrofoam package with crumpled paper, poly
   peanuts, or bubble wrap.

I notice most researchers are over estimating the weight of the dry ice in
their shipment. Often, I am told there is 5lbs of dry ice and the weight of
the entire package is only 4lbs. If you have spent many lab hours preparing
a sample, it only makes sense to protect it with enough dry ice.
