ENTOMOLOGY SWAP and FUNDRAISER

Dear friends and colleagues,

I've always enjoyed passing along treasures that I no longer need and picking up new (to me) items from friends and family. In a small way, this can help reduce waste and prolong the useful life of various items (clothes, games, puzzles, gear, small furniture, etc!) I also love figuring out new ways to support students in our department. I'd like to combine these ideas and pilot an Entomology Swap Meet/Fundraiser, hopefully at a time that it may be useful to incoming (or departing!) members of our department. I am tentatively thinking about running this pilot on the afternoon of Friday, September 20, but this is flexible if it's a bad time for others. I've already discussed this idea with some colleagues, and together we've come up with the following model:

1. Anyone interested may contribute items for the swap! Have stuff that you were thinking of donating to charity? Bring it here first to see if a colleague could use it. If you are interested in contributing items, please just drop me a line at jpurcell at ucr.edu<mailto:jpurcell at ucr.edu> so that I can assess interest.

2. Depending upon interest, we will reserve space of an appropriate size for a couple of hours and will set out all of the items for the swap.

3. Anyone is welcome to pick up items from the swap. We'll ask that you donate to the Entomology Inclusivity Fund for each bag that you fill (or something along these lines)- Ideally, bring your own bag(s).

4. I will plan to donate unclaimed items to the Mary S. Roberts Humane Society thrift store at the end of the day. I won't be able to manage very large items, so if you are hoping to swap your couch (or similar), please bring a photo and arrange a transfer outside of the swap day!

I hope that this can be a win/win event, allowing folks to clear some unwanted items from their homes, pass them along to people who can use them, and raise money for deserving students all at the same time.

Please let me know if you are interested and also if you'd be willing to help on the day.

All the best,

Jessica
