*Assistant Professor - Tree Fruit Entomologist*

The Department of Entomology at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks
candidates for a tenure-system position (12 month appointment) in Tree
Fruit Entomology at the Assistant Professor rank, to conduct research and
extension in one of the leading and most agriculturally-diverse
fruit-growing states in the U.S. The successful candidate will focus on
developing management programs for arthropod pests of tree fruits (apples,
cherries, etc.) of economic importance in the Great Lakes region, with an
emphasis on alternatives to conventional insecticides such as novel
chemistries, biological control, mating disruption, cultural control, and
resistant varieties.
Responsibilities: Assignment - research (45%), extension (45%), and
teaching (10%). Expectations for the position are to develop an
internationally recognized program implementing IPM systems and control
strategies to mitigate the impacts of domestic and invasive arthropod pests
of tree fruit; secure substantial competitive external funding; publish in
peer-reviewed journals; develop Extension educational materials; and
recruit and mentor graduate students to graduation. A collaborative and
multidisciplinary approach to research and extension efforts is preferred,
thus the candidate will be expected to work with growers, Extension
educators, private industry, and other stakeholders related to the tree
fruit industry. In addition, the successful candidate will develop and
teach an annual seminar course of their choosing.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Entomology, Ecology, or
related discipline; demonstrated training and expertise in integrated
pest management, applied ecology, chemical ecology, or other disciplines
that have application in managing tree fruit pests or other arthropods of
economic importance; and a record of scholarly activities in their field
as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications; and clear evidence of
research funding. Postdoctoral experience with expertise in integrating
multidisciplinary areas of tree fruit entomology, and a record of funding
from competitive state, national and/or international agencies, are desired.
Review of applications begins after November 15, 2021.
The Entomology Department and the College of Agriculture and Natural
Resources (CANR) at Michigan State University are committed to achieving
excellence by creating and sustaining an accessible and inclusive culture
that values cultural and academic diversity. We are an equal
opportunity/affirmative action employer and are particularly interested in
candidates of all backgrounds who are committed to the principle that
academic excellence is achieved through open access and proactive
inclusion. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for
employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual
orientation, gender identity, national origin, citizenship, disability or
protected veteran status.
