Hello Colleagues,
This quarter I am teaching my science writing course, ENTM 060W, for the second time. As part of the course, we have a lesson on interviewing scientists about their work. This year, I would like to run this as concurrent sessions with small breakout rooms of about 7-10 students working together to interview a scientist from the Entomology department. I am looking for 4-5 volunteer interviewees (students, post-docs, staff, or faculty, especially if you have been interviewed previously for a popular science piece on your work). Prior to the interview, the students will read a published paper of your choosing and develop a set of questions. In the breakout rooms, each visiting scientist will give a short oral presentation on the paper (10-15 minutes) after which the students will practice having a conversation with you about your science.
Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering to be a participant in this exercise through a brief visit in my class (about 45 minutes) on October 22, from 9:45-10:30am. You can contact me at kerry.mauck at ucr.edu<mailto:kerry.mauck at ucr.edu>.
This is a great opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to practice talking about their work (go ahead and recycle those student seminar presentations). You can also put it as a guest lecture on your CV!
Best,
Kerry Mauck
