Assistant/Associate Professor of Specialty Crop Entomologist

The Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University invites
applications at the Associate or Assistant Professor rank for a Specialty
Crop Entomologist with a strong focus on agroecology and the improvement of
sustainable management practices in various specialty cropping systems.
This is a nine-month, tenure track faculty position with 60% extension, 20%
research, and 20% teaching appointment. The department seeks an individual
that complements existing expertise in ecology, genetics, pollination, and
pest management. Ohio is a top producer of specialty crops, and its diverse
landscape is conducive for growing a wide array of fruits and vegetables in
both rural and urban communities. Specialty crop production is rapidly
expanding in Ohio, facilitated by emerging industries that include grapes,
hops and hemp. Individuals with expertise in specialty crops, invasive
ecology, and pest management are strongly encouraged to apply. The ability
to work collaboratively with faculty across multiple departments and
colleges at the university is also desired.

A successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally and
internationally respected program in specialty crop entomology that
integrates both extension and research activities. A focus on the impact of
insects on specialty crop production, such as invasive species, plant
disease vectors, or pollination is expected. This focus should also
implement basic knowledge in invasive and population ecology, toxicology,
molecular biology, ecological modeling or landscape ecology and genetics to
improve sustainable pest management in various specialty crop systems. The
desired individual should demonstrate an ability to effectively communicate
with various stakeholders including extension personnel, specialty crop
farmers, master gardeners, commodity organizations, agricultural industry,
and government agencies (e.g. Ohio Departments of Agriculture and
Environmental Protection, USDA-APHIS). Publication of extension information
for stakeholders and research results in scholarly journals, mentoring
graduate, and undergraduate students, obtaining external funding, and
developing a collaborative research program is expected. The successful
candidate will also participate actively in teaching courses related to
Insect Pest Management (ENTMLGY 4601 and 5600) or biological control (
ENTMLGY 5500) and pesticide science (ENTMLGY 5800).

Salary is competitive and is commensurate with experience and a
comprehensive benefits package is provided. This position will be located
at the either on Columbus Campus or the Wooster Campus of the Ohio State
University. Columbus is a vibrant city in central Ohio offering world class
culture, arts, education, and industry. Wooster offers excellent schools,
affordable cost of living and convenient access to the cities of Akron,
Cleveland and Columbus.

The Ohio State University is committed to establishing a culturally and
intellectually diverse environment, encouraging all members of our learning
community to reach their full potential. We are responsive to dual-career
families and strongly promote work-life balance to support our community
members through a suite of institutionalized policies. We are an SNF Advance
Institution and a member of the Ohio/Western Pennsylvania/ West Virginia
Higher Education Recruitment Consortium.

The Ohio State University is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified
applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to
race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation or identity, national
origin, disability status, or protected veteran status.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae,
statement of extension, research, teaching, and diversity interests to the
Search Committee Chair Dr. Luis Canas, Specialty Crop Entomologist Search,
108 Thorne Hall, 1680 Madison Ave, Wooster Ohio, 44691

or canas.4 at osu.edu (cc to parker.1390 at osu.edu, please).

Review of applications will start October 31, 2020 but will continue until
the position is filled.
