postbacs at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
To: Jann Vendetti <jvendett at nhm.org>

Dear friends and colleagues,

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is recruiting applicants
for an *NSF-funded postbaccalaureate research and training program* called
*U*nderstanding *N*ature and *L*os *A*ngeles *B*iodiversity (UNLAB). It is
a 1-year, full-time, paid position (with benefits) that will serve as an
apprenticeship or internship for postbaccalaureates interested in graduate
school and/or a career in biodiversity-related science. Participants will
learn specimen-based research methods and contribute to a research project
based on Southern California biodiversity. There are projects in
malacology, paleontology, fishes, ornithology, mammalogy, and herpetology. *The
application deadline closes March 3*.

Although open to all, *this program is intended for those who have not had
substantial research experience.*

 *Eligibility:*

· U.S. citizen, U.S. national, lawful refugee, or permanent resident
of the U.S.

· Received an undergraduate degree (B.S. or B.A.) between July 1,
2019 and June 30, 2023

*Dates of program:* July 1, 2023–June 30, 2024

*Location: *Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles

*More information:* https://nhm.org/unlab

*Application:* https://www.nsfetap.org/award/736/opportunity/782

· Applicants must create an account, then search “natural history” or
use the link above to locate the UNLAB program. Applicants must provide a
transcript and answer questions about their motivations for applying to
this program and their interest in the natural sciences.

*Application window:* February 3, 2023–March 3, 2023

We particularly encourage applications from individuals belonging to groups
that are underrepresented in biological science and/or who have experienced
barriers to participating in a mentored research opportunity.

This is a suitable program for enthusiastic and motivated seniors who have
done well in your classes but haven’t been involved in substantial research
within your lab or elsewhere, and/or recent graduates with whom you are
still in contact and who didn’t have substantial research experience due to
the COVID 19 pandemic or any other challenge or set back.

Please share this announcement with your colleagues.

Many thanks and all the best,
Jann
