Dear all,

I’ll be teaching Isotopes in Ecology and Environmental Sciences (ENSC-218)
this fall 2023 and I’ll appreciate forwarding this announcement to graduate
students in your group/department. The course is designed to provide
graduate students and advanced undergraduates an introductory understanding
of how and why stable- and radioisotopes are used in ecology and
environmental sciences.

We’ll explore the principles and techniques of isotope tracer fractionation
and mixing. We start with basic concepts introducing isotope notation,
mixing models, and kinetic and equilibrium fractionation concepts. We’ll
then go over case studies involving stable- and radioisotopes of C, N, O
and S. We’ll also use class and discussion time to gain hands-on experience
operating an isotope ratio mass spectrometer and cavity ring-down
spectrometer.

This course is taught every other year, so this would be the last chance to
take it before fall 2025. Prerequisites: math up to calculus (though we
won’t use calculus) and at least one year of college chemistry.

Thank you,

-Pete
