Jim Strittholt is Co-founder and President of the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) and has 30 years of experience in applying computer mapping technologies to address various ecological assessments and conservation planning projects in the U.S. and internationally. He holds several undergraduate degrees in Botany, Zoology, and Secondary Education with an emphasis on forests and vertebrates as well as a Masters in Population Genetics all from Miami University of Ohio. Before going for his Ph.D., Jim worked as a zookeeper for large mammals at the Columbus Zoo under Jack Hanna and taught high school science for 6 years. He received a One-of-a-Kind Ph.D. in Landscape Ecology and Conservation Planning from Ohio State University in 1994 after which time he was the first ecologist hired by the newly founded Wildlands Project. In 1997, he led the creation of CBI where his work continues. He has authored over a hundred papers and reports and has served as a PI on a wide range of projects including protected areas planning, renewable energy, forest and agricultural assessments, endangered species recovery, and ecological modeling. Moving conservation science into online platforms and applications has been a primary focus in recent years with the most notable product being Data Basin, which continues to rapidly grow in popularity with a global reach.
