Dear Colleagues,

We hope this finds you well!

We respectfully request that you share this with your colleagues.

After two years since the creation of the Black Study Initiative Committee, two rounds of revisions following CHASS EC and Academic Senate input, and the collection of over 2,500 signatures, on May 24th 2022 the Academic Senate will vote on the proposal<https://ucr-senate-public.s3.amazonaws.com/issues/updated-deptblackstudy-full-617b1809c18d7-.pdf> for the creation of the Department of Black Study at UCR.

This is your chance to show up, let your voice be heard and vote in the affirmative!

Why a Department of Black Study

Black Study is a transdisciplinary body of knowledge emerging from historical and contemporary African, African American, and diasporic Black experiences. Its urgent need became all the more evident in the wake of the 2020 transnational and multiracial mass mobilization for Black Lives. Black Study encompasses but significantly exceeds conventional curricular frameworks of Black Studies, African American Studies, Africana Studies, as well as traditional disciplines in the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts. Black Study emphasizes the verb study: the collective activities -- past, present and future -- expressed in abolitionist African and Black diasporic queer, trans, and feminist transdisciplinary approaches to a global framing of Black experiences. To succeed, the initiative needs strong support from a broad coalition of people, communities and organizations.
