Curatorial Assistant I (Entomology)

POSITION SUMMARY:
This full-time position (40 hours per week) is under the supervision of the
Entomology Collection Manager. The California Academy of Sciences
Entomology & Arachnology collections contain over 18 million specimens and
are growing steadily. With a very active loan program, tasks will be
focused on maintaining the timely shipping and receiving of specimens
across both dry and wet collections, as well as taking on curation
projects. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting with loan
shipping and receiving, routine collection curation and maintenance,
database management, hosting visiting researchers and public tours, and
volunteer and intern training. Occasionally this position will provide
field or lab assistance at the request of the Collection Manager or
Curators. While independent research is encouraged, it is not part of
regular duties.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

   - When a request is received, the employee will pack and ship specimens,
   fill out necessary paperwork, and contact the recipient about impending
   arrival of specimens.
   - When a loan return is received, the employee will place the specimens
   back in the organized systematic part of the collection in a timely manner.
   - General curation and maintenance of dry and wet collections.
   - Will help maintain collection databases for loans, specimens, lots,
   and accessions.
   - Database and image specimens as needs arise.
   - May work with and train volunteers, docents, and interns to help with
   the collection
   - .Follow all Academy safety regulations
   - Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill,
and/or ability preferred or required.

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION :
A qualified Candidate will possess a combination of the following
experience and/or equivalent education:

   - Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to shipping and receiving
   of biological materials.
   - Advance knowledge of entomology, a specific field of expertise, and
   collection preservation techniques preferred.
   - Bachelor’s Degree in natural science, or equivalent education and
   experience.
   - 2-3 years of experience working with collections and a general
   knowledge of entomology.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

   - Must be able to read fine print and interpret documents such as safety
   rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
   - Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
   - Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.
   - Must be able to print legibly.
   - Must be computer literate and able to type with minimal errors.
   - Must be detail oriented and have good manual dexterity to manipulate
   small, fragile specimens without damage.
   - Must be able to work both independently and as a team member, and with
   a diversity of stakeholders.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT:

duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit,
walk, and communicate. . Must be able to transport 50 lbs.  Must be able to
perform repetitive motions 40% of the time.
