Dear Graduate Students in English and English Majors:
I hope you’re well.
The Walt Whitman Initiative in New York City is offering fellowship awards to graduate students and undergraduate students who are doing innovative research on Walt Whitman and his cultural legacy, and they are particularly interested in applications from scholars who will bring new perspectives and who are from historically underrepresented communities.
The award includes:
$2,500 honorarium
Dedicated scholar-mentor from WWI matched to research interests, providing monthly guidance throughout the fellowship year
Access to premier archives and collections, including the Tane Whitman Research Library and introductions to NYC’s literary and archival community
Professional development opportunities including a public presentation of research and potential contribution to WWI publications
Travel support (non-local fellows): One roundtrip ticket to NYC for intensive archival research; (local fellows): One-to-Two nights hotel accommodation
One-year fellowship period with ongoing support bridging traditional scholarship and public humanities

"We at UCR would like to respectfully acknowledge and recognize our responsibility to the original and current caretakers of this land, water, and air: the Cahuilla, Tongva, Luiseño, and Serrano peoples and all of their ancestors and descendants, past, present, and future. Today this meeting place is home to many Indigenous peoples from all over the world, including UCR faculty, students, and staff, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these homelands."
