Dear All:
We are organizing a food drive for R’Pantry in response to the withholding of SNAP/CalFresh benefits during the government shutdown. While the recent federal rulings to restore funding to these programs are encouraging, there’s still a lot of uncertainty, and we want to to help ensure that our wonderful students, faculty, and staff at UCR don’t have to worry about meeting their basic needs this winter. Read on for more information if you’d like to pitch in or learn how to access food, supplies, and other Basic Needs resources!
Our best,
Profs. Raheja and Stapely
**
When is the food drive happening?
We will accept donations continuously for the rest of the quarter, with two target delivery dates on November 25 and December 9. On those dates we’ll take what we’ve gathered to that point over to the good people at Basic Needs/R’Pantry.
What can I donate?
R’Pantry has published this wish list <https://studentdocs.ucr.edu/basicneeds/rpantry-wishlist.pdf> of most-requested items. In our exchange with them, R’Pantry also expressed particular demand for:
- toothbrushes and toothpaste
- deodorant
- chapstick
- microfiber rags and sponges
- tide pods and dryer sheets
You can also make monetary donations directly to Basic Needs (see below).
Where can I drop off physical donations?
Please drop off food and supplies in the bookcase opposite the mailboxes in the English Department office.
Can I make a monetary contribution?
Yes! You can make a one-time direct donation to Basic Needs here <https://myadv.ucr.edu/21keb/200944>. it’s also possible to opt in to a payroll deduction by filling out this form <https://studentdocs.ucr.edu/basicneeds/Basic%20Needs%20Employee%20Payroll%20Deduction%20Form.pdf> and sending it to ucrgifts at ucr.edu <mailto:ucrgifts at ucr.edu>. (This info is also on the Basic Needs donation page <https://basicneeds.ucr.edu/donate>).
What Basic Needs benefits are available to me and how can I access them?
Anyone who needs them is more than welcome to take food and supplies directly from the departmental drop-off location. You can also access resources through the UCR Basic Needs Department, which encompasses several food security programs (CalFresh, R’Pantry, Meal Support) as well as Housing Assistance, Economic Crisis support, and more.
