Dear Colleagues:

We are delighted to announce the upcoming mini-conference, THE FUTURE OF
WRITING, to be held at UCI November 6-7, 2008 in the School of the
Humanities. Please spread the word...

The Future of Writing is a two-day conference designed to bring together
scholars from both across the UC system and other universities and a cadre
of nationally recognized experts to explore how the new communications
technologies, particularly the Internet, are challenging previous
conceptions of what "writing" is. Through a range of panels, demonstrations,
and a new media art exhibit, participants will consider the following: How
are new communications technologies changing the way people "compose,"
"write," and "author"? How do collaborative writing spaces and social
networking challenge the concepts of "text" and "author"? And how are
emerging emphases on visual literacies shifting what we think of as writing?

Convening a group of scholars to consider such questions should productively
impact the work of individual scholars, promote cross campus collaboration,
and raise the level of university awareness about the effects of new
technologies on writing.

The conference is co-sponsored by the UCI Office of the Campus Writing
Coordinator and HumaniTechR, with support from the International Center for
Writing and Translation.
