Subject: [Staff] Email Hoax (warning)

Dear Campus Community,

Recently, there has been a rise in the number of e-mail scams making
their way across the Internet. Some of these messages are crafted to
look as though they come from official campus groups. In fact,
during the past 36 hours, fraudulent e-mail claiming to be from UCR's
Helpdesk has been sent across campus. These emails ask campus users
to provide their Social Security Numbers, usernames, passwords, birth
dates and other personal information.

These e-mails should be deleted immediately. No legitimate
organization would ever request Social Security Number, passwords,
etc. via e-mail. And while C&C blocks these e-mail scams (known as
Phishing) as quickly as we can, some of these messages will
unfortunately make their way to your computer. Again, please delete
these e-mails, and if you ever have any questions or concerns about a
particular message, please call the Helpdesk at 2-3555.

Thank you,

Larry McGrath
Director Computing Support Services
