[Englecturers] Workload Committee Progress

Hi All,

I received some insightful questions about the workload changes.

First, some recent hires have asked how compensation changed
with the increase in class sizes. Well . . . it didn't. We
just worked more for the same salaries. Our wages have
increased, due to the pressure various university stakeholders
(mostly the union) have put on the administration. The whole
point, though, of increasing class sizes is to save money by
providing less effective, more 'efficient' education, which
harms both instructors and students.

Second, Everyone will get the same credit for teaching a
course, regardless of how many courses that person teaches:
all continuing, one-year contract, and quarter-to-quarter
lecturers will get the same compensation--one class will equal
1.125 IWC. The starting salary next year will be $43,336, so
each course will earn a starting lecturer $5,417. That's it,
regardless of the number of courses one teaches.

There is a problem, in that during fall quarter, and maybe
winter quarter, people will technically work overtime, which
is not allowed. On other campuses, the fall quarter problem
is dealt with by carrying over full-time credit (BUT NOT PAY)
from fall to later quarters.

That said, the problem arises for someone who is only
contracted to teach one quarter. Then, that person might be
working overtime without a second quarter to even things out.
There is some talk that UCR couldn't employ a one-quarter
person for three classes in the Fall, IE a 3-0-0 schedule.
Instead, that person would be limited to 2 courses (for 2.25
IWC, or $10,834).

If, however, one were contracted for at least four courses,
one could teach a 3-1-0 load, or any other combination except
for a 3-3-0. There may be other fixes for this problem, and
we are looking into it.

I hope this helps; please ask any other questions.

Ben Harder
