Description: Planned Communities: The Changing Role
Where will the majority of people live in the future?
While infill projects new housing built in
revitalized downtowns, established city
neighborhoods or established suburbs -- have
become more popular in Southern California and
the nation, they wont be built fast enough or be
able to handle the rapid population growth expected in the next 20 years.
Most future homeowners will live in new
master-planned communities housing built on
vacant land. But the modern planned community is
considerably different from those of even a
decade ago. Many of todays planned communities
are sustainable projects designed to meet the
needs and desires of future homebuyers while
integrating new thinking in design, site
planning, green building, and smart growth.
Steve Johnson, Director of Metrostudys Southern
California region, will present an overview of
planned communities in the 21st century and
examine their role in meeting future housing
needs. Johnson has 30 years of experience as an
advisor to homebuilders, developers, public
agencies and private investors throughout the
western U.S., and is considered an expert on the
rapidly urbanizing markets in Southern
California. He is widely recognized for his
creative contributions to many successful
projects, including development strategies for
unimproved land, multifamily, adult communities and commercial properties.
Randal W. Jackson, President and
Principal-In-Charge of Design Services for The
Planning Center in Costa Mesa, will provide
examples of the different kinds of planned
communities in which he and The Planning Center
have been involved primarily in the western U.S.
Jackson has more than 38 years of experience in
planning and design. He has conceived and
developed unique land use and community concepts
for award-winning communities built around and
integrating transportation, open space, park and recreation systems.
The seminar will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m.
in Humanities 1500, UCR campus. See map.
A lively audience of elected officials, business
people, city and county staff, environmentalists,
members of the community groups and those who
simply want to explore topics affecting the
future of their communities is anticipated.
The seminars are free of charge.
