DEFEND THE GSOC SIX

As of January 26th, six teaching assistants at New York University and members of Graduate Student Organizing Committee(GSOC)/United Auto Workers local 2110 have been fired for participating in an ongoing strike for union recognition. These members have been told by the NYU administration that they are being blocked from teaching assistantships and will no longer receive stipends—the equivalent of pay for graduate assistants— for two semesters. This punishment is being doled out on workers who have refused to work without the democratic right of union representation—representation that in the past has won graduate assistants at NYU a 38% increase in stipends over 4 years, employer-paid health insurance, and a fair system by which to file working grievances with the university. In particular, these targeted workers were teaching stand-alone courses (courses without faculty instruction) that were unrelated to the workers' academic studies.

NYU wants to crush the union in any way possible—but by firing these workers they bring to the forefront everything that is wrong with a university that has proudly implemented a corporate model. Let's not let NYU get away with this. Please take a moment to call and/or e-mail the NYU administration and demand they reinstate these workers' stipends and eligibility to teach.
