Hello all.

As you may know, NYU is in the middle of a labor
dispute in
which the administration is refusing to recognize the
elected union of its graduate teaching and research
assistants and is threatening to lay off striking
workers if they do not return to work by this
Wednesday. The administration's response to the strike
has included heavy-handed tactics such as silently
adding administrators to Blackboard courses to monitor
communications between instructors and students.

In response, an international group of scholars,
convened by Judith Butler, has written a letter to NYU
President John Sexton and posted it online as a
petition. Over the course of the past three days, more
than 3,600 people from around the world have signed
on.

I'd strongly encourage you to sign this petition. You
can find it at
http://www.petitiononline.com/tosexton/. If you'd like
more information about these events, I find
http://nerdsforgsoc.blogspot.com to be the best
source. Of course, the administration's position can
be easily found at
http://www.nyu.edu.

Thanks for reading over this message, and feel free to
pass it on to other students, faculty, or staff
members.

Best,
Emily Anderson
