*Abstract: Global change and extinction risk in marine ecosystems*

Marine sedimentary rocks contain a complex and incomplete but invaluable
record of environments and biodiversity in the global oceans over hundreds
of millions of years. This record documents tens of thousands of
extinctions, some occurring during major mass extinction events associated
with rapid environmental change and others during more quiescent
“background” intervals. When integrated with paleoenvironmental proxy
records, differential patterns of extinction and survival (selectivity) can
provide critical insights into extinction processes. I will discuss recent
work aimed at elucidating the determinants of extinction risk during early
Paleozoic mass extinction events, during more recent intervals of
background extinction, and in the near future.
