<div><blockquote type="cite" class=""><div class=""><div dir="ltr" class=""><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Hi everyone!</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">My name is Sonali Bhakta and I am an undergraduate <a href="https://scienceambassadors.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" class="">CNAS Science Ambassador</a> and co-lead from my project Delta SIFY. I am reaching out to introduce you to a mentoring opportunity with the CNAS Science Ambassador Program, directed by Divisional Dean Connie Nugent. We are looking to recruit scientists to coach middle school students from Riverside STEM Academy for the Science Olympiad Competition.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><a href="https://www.soinc.org/" target="_blank" class="">The Science Olympiad Competition</a> is a scientific competition designed to test middle school students in scientific disciplines spanning life, personal, and social sciences, earth and space science, physical science and chemistry, technology and engineering, and inquiry and nature of science. The Competition comprises 23 events, of which 3 are earth and space science-based.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">We are interested in acquiring 2-3 environmental & earth and planetary scientists (professors, postdocs, graduate students, or undergraduates), with each volunteer coaching 3-4 middle school students either in person or virtually for a one-hour/week commitment until February/March 2023. Volunteers can choose to coach any day Monday-Friday from 2:30-3:30 pm, with the exception of Wednesdays from 12:40-1:40 pm.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">The events requiring coaches are:</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><blockquote style="margin:0px 0px 0px 40px;border:none;padding:0px" class=""><div class=""><b class=""><u class="">Dynamic Planet:</u></b></div></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0px 0px 0px 40px;border:none;padding:0px" class=""><div class="">Dynamic Planet is an event concerned with the processes which change the Earth. This year students will use process skills to complete tasks related to Earth's fresh waters.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0px 0px 0px 40px;border:none;padding:0px" class=""><div class=""><b class=""><u class="">Meteorology:</u></b></div></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0px 0px 0px 40px;border:none;padding:0px" class=""><div class="">Meteorology is a current weather and climate-based event designed to test students' basic understanding of meteorological principles and ability to interpret and analyze meteorological data. In this event, participants will use scientific process skills as well as qualitative and quantitative analyses to demonstrate an understanding of factors that influence everyday weather.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0px 0px 0px 40px;border:none;padding:0px" class=""><div class=""><b class=""><u class="">Solar Systems:</u></b></div></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0px 0px 0px 40px;border:none;padding:0px" class=""><div class="">Solar Systems is an event that focuses on habitability in our Solar System and other planetary systems.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0px 0px 0px 40px;border:none;padding:0px" class=""><div class="">I have attached a pdf of the Official Science Olympiad Rules Manual with specific information for each event.</div></blockquote><br class=""><div class="">We believe forming a connection between real, established scientists and young students can greatly increase our ability to help these middle school students succeed and foster their interest in STEM.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">We appreciate all and any help that you can provide to us. If you are interested in this opportunity, please click <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aq7qE3VR0odK4vMvIZ197OcAQHXRVidcKZVjIu78aWQ/edit" target="_blank" class="">here</a>. Feel free to share the link with anyone interested in volunteering.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to email us at <a href="mailto:sbhak006@ucr.edu" target="_blank" class="">sbhak006@ucr.edu</a> (Sonali) and <a href="mailto:jrese009@ucr.edu" target="_blank" class="">jrese009@ucr.edu</a> (Jennalyn, Co-Lead). Thank you so much for your consideration in helping out with our project!</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Best Wishes,</div><div class="">Sonali Bhakta</div><div class="">B.S. Biochemistry | Law & Society Minor</div><div class="">UC Riverside 2023</div></div>
