Dear Professor Flegal,

The San Diego State University and University of California, Irvine Joint Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Computational Science is aimed at training scientists and engineers who will create advanced computational methods and tools to model and solve challenging problems at the intersections of scientific disciplines. The doctoral program offers coursework and research in a broad range of subjects that develop expertise in Mathematical Modeling and Scientific Computing with applications to Biological Science, Earth Science, Engineering Science, Health, Physical and/or Chemical Science.

As a program, we are committed to reaching out to all qualified students and to increasing access for talented but financially challenged individuals. I am reaching out to you to ask you to share information on our program with students and advisors in your department in order to help us with this task.

A virtual information session for the joint doctoral program will be held on October 13th, 2022 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm on Gather (https://gather.town/). To attend, please have students register using the link following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdZIlnEMcBwgDk9nvgFyaBGqMyDhbYE550HNWNTJrdxxYjQNg/viewform.

A link to the virtual space will be sent only to registered participants 2 days before the event. This will be a great opportunity to meet and interact with current students in the program, potential faculty advisors and program coordinators.

UCI and SDSU campuses are recognized as Hispanic Serving Institutions offering a welcoming and supportive environment for diverse students. Admitted graduate students are offered a range of financial assistance options while they are pursuing advanced degrees, including Teaching, Graduate, and Research Assistantships and Fellowships.

The proximity of the universities and the strong ties of the faculty to local industry
(that includes Biomedical, Communications, Engineering, and Defense, Healthcare, and Entertainment) provides numerous opportunities for students to interact with researchers from industry and get hands on experience working on real life problems. In addition, the region's challenges in water, environmental safety, security and seismic risk often provide numerous challenging problems of relevance for future graduate students and researchers.

Applicants with strong backgrounds in mathematics, physical, biological and geological sciences, computer science, and engineering are invited to apply.

Please have your students contact the Computational Science Research Center if they have questions about our graduate programs and check our website for details regarding the doctoral program and the application process. Email: csrc at sdsu.edu<mailto:csrc at sdsu.edu>
Website: http://www.csrc.sdsu.edu/csrc/doctoral.html

Should students need any assistance preparing their applications, please have them contact me directly at mpaolini at sdsu.edu<mailto:mpaolini at sdsu.edu>. I am happy to answer questions and provide assistance.
Thank you for your help in reaching out to your students and aiding in our efforts to make sure that talented but financially challenged individuals have equitable access to our program.

Sincerely,

Maureen Gibbins Paolini
