Interested in a statistics or data science position in the academic or
industry sector beyond tech?  Then this session should interest you! We've
seen a major decrease in tech industry jobs in the last couple of years, so
we are bringing a variety of positions for you during this session to focus
on what careers are available beyond the tech industry.

This event is part of a series of Virtual Career Fairs that NISS has been
hosting for over 3 years! (Check out earlier virtual career fair sessions!

Some of these sessions have focused on academic positions, others on
positions in government agencies and industry. This session describes
opportunities for statisticians/data scientists from academia and
companies. These statisticians from the academic and industry sector will
provide attendees with an inside look at the research that statisticians in
they get involved in and career opportunities for you to consider!

Each presenter will have 15 minutes to address the following general topics:

   1. What advice do you give your new hires?
   2. How can a new hire seek out a colleague who can provide good career
   advice?
   3. What are the potential distinguishing characteristics of candidates
   for positions in your institution?
   4. What advice would you give to potential job candidates this coming
   year?
   5. What advice would you give about how Ph.D. students or postdocs
   should prepare for the future?
   6. A live Q&A Session will take place after the panel discussion.

*About the Speakers*

*Rebecca Ferrell*, MS *|* is currently the Director of Testing Analytics at
Starbucks in Seattle, leading a team of data and decision scientists
supporting in-store, marketing, and digital experimentation. At Starbucks,
she has held previous roles in customer analytics, measurement science, and
forecasting. Rebecca earned a BS in Mathematics from Carleton College and
an MS in Statistics from the University of Washington. Prior to UW, she
also worked as an analyst in healthcare economic consulting.

*Daniel Jeske*, PhD, *|* is the Vice Provost of Academic Personnel and a
Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of California,
Riverside, and served a 7-year term as the Statistics Department Chair. As
Vice Provost he leads the team at UCR that oversees merit and promotion
reviews, recruitment, and training of academic employees. He is an Elected
Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and a past
Editor-in-Chief of The American Statistician. He is the current President
of the International Society of Business and Industrial Statistics (ISBIS),
a society of the International Statistical Institute (ISI). His research
interests have included classification and prediction methodologies,
mixture models, statistical process control methodologies, biostatistics
applications, and reliability modeling.

*Thanh Nguyen*, MS *|* is currently a Bioinformatics Data Analyst at the
Moffit Cancer Center where she analyzes multiome data. She earned a BA in
Marketing and Statistics at Truman State University and an MS in Operations
Research from Illinois Institute of Technology.

*Jim Harmon*, PhD, *|* is a Staff Data Scientist at Liberty Mutual. Prior
to that, he earned a BS in math from MIT and a PhD in statistics at the
University of Washington, where he was awarded the Dorothy M. Gilford
Teaching Award in 2013. Along the way, Jim has worked as an actuary and has
also worked in a number of teaching roles both in and outside of university
contexts. In short, his expertise can be summarized with two statements: He
solves complex, quantitative problems and he helps people understand the
solutions to those problems. These are the common threads running through
his actuarial, teaching, and data scientist experiences.

Moderator *Wei Vivian Li*, PhD, *|* is an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Statistics at University of California, Riverside. She is
also a faculty member of the UCR graduate program in Genetics, Genomics &
Bioinformatics. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor at Rutgers
Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Vivian obtained her Ph.D.
degree in Statistics from the University of California, Los Angeles, where
she was working with Dr. Jingyi Jessica Li. Prior to joining UCLA, Vivian
received her B.S. in Statistics from the School of Mathematics and
Statistics at Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
