Poets & Writers Announces

2013 California Writers Exchange Contest

Chris Abani and Marilyn Chin Will Judge

Prize Includes All-Expenses-Paid Trip to New York City

and Meetings with Professionals in the Literary Community

Poets & Writers, the nation's largest nonprofit organization serving creative writers, invites California writers to apply for the 2013 California Writers Exchange Award. Poets and fiction writers who are residents of California and have never published a book, or have published only one full-length book in the genre they're entering, are eligible. Chris Abani will serve as fiction judge, and Marilyn Chin will judge poetry.

The winning poet and fiction writer will each receive a $500 honorarium and an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to meet with top literary professionals, including editors, agents, publishers, and prominent writers. While in New York, winners will also give a public reading, hosted by Poets & Writers.

Past winners have included Elaine Beale, author of Another Life Altogether (Spiegel & Grau, 2010); Dylan Landis, author of Normal People Don't Live Like This (Persea Books, 2009), a Newsday Best Book of 2009; and Craig Santos Perez, author of two collections of poetry: from unincorporated territory [hacha] (Tinfish Press, 2008) and from unincorporated territory [saina] (Omnidawn Publishing, 2010), a finalist for the LA Times 2010 Book Prize for Poetry and the winner of the 2011 PEN Center USA Literary Award for Poetry.

Guidelines and application forms are available here<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001lPkTWDo7cQiD8Ta-o87Z_XLYfzgCLTtawIKlE5XHzvpLAeSV6Lcacbuh1usbKW93FtsQEauBI2TdTYfXhV4hdtoW9D6ZECopeDV-HTxVd3G_WLBCbz-J5JNfG-SajEiK16NWcqHaU_6qAFUMvA3tvWaAKqn3DlTZM_FwxVvD_xk=>. Applications must be postmarked by August 31, 2012.

About the California Writers Exchange Award

The California Writers Exchange<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001lPkTWDo7cQiD8Ta-o87Z_XLYfzgCLTtawIKlE5XHzvpLAeSV6Lcacbuh1usbKW93FtsQEauBI2TdTYfXhV4hdtoW9D6ZECopeDV-HTxVd3G_WLBCbz-J5JNfG-SajEiK16NWcqHaU_6qAFUMvA3tvWaAKqn3DlTZM_FwxVvD_xk=> has been offered every third year since 2004. It is modeled on P&W's long-running Maureen Egen Writers Exchange Award<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001lPkTWDo7cQhv-KEYKcpTWpU4m4a1gVd8TAN-YkbhgbDqZYbWj-uRwf9dVQqWWhADxHS7YdJP6LGmKn81HxwZJ4tPlwxN3ifhvKGNZGDZcMxvaWfQH756bWa2IOQEagA9ZNL-uHHNdLQSlLQFLflI6dfeIJWaSrv0-ikOy40vAjc=>, which has been providing promising writers significant opportunities for professional advancement since 1984. To date, 84 writers from 33 states have received that award. As a direct result, many past winners--notably Sue Monk Kidd, author of The Secret Life of Bees--have had their books published, received awards and fellowships, secured teaching positions, and laid the groundwork for their professional lives as writers.

The California Writers Exchange Award is supported by the James Irvine Foundation.
