> RIVERSIDE, CA-UCR Culver Center of the Arts hosts the “Indigenous Choreographers Residency.” It is a two-week research project bringing three accomplished Indigenous choreographers to the UCR campus and to Culver April 9-22, 2012. The featured choreographers are Tanya Lukin Linklater, a Alutiiq dancer, choreographer, and performance artist from Kodiak Island Alaska; Rulan Tangen of DANCING EARTH Contemporary Dance Creations, based in Santa Fe; and Jack Gray, a Maori (Ngati Porou, Ngati Kuhungunu, Ngapuhi, Te Rarawa) choreographer from Aotearoa/New Zealand, and founder of Atamira, Dance Company, New Zealand's leading Maori contemporary dance company. These choreographers will use Culver dance studios to develop and share their current choreographic work with one another. They will also foster discussion with UCR faculty and students and with Native high school students about “Indigenous choreography” as an art form and professional career path. The residency will include movement workshops, roundtable discussions, work on a collaborative dance-writing project, and a public performance in the Atrium Gallery. The event is organized by Jacqueline Shea Murphy, UCR Associate Professor, Department of Dance. “Indigenous Choreographers Residency” is supported in part by the Culver Arts Research Laboratory (CARL) Residnecy program.
