The Council is pleased to announce that it has awarded California Story Fund (CSF) grants to a range of projects that give evidence of California's rich and complex mix of peoples, cultures, and experiences. In line with the Council'sSearching for Democracy initiative, many of the projects will provide insight into the varied ways democracy can be understood and interpreted. These projects tell the stories of young people and elders, of Native Californians and recent immigrants, of artists and activists and leaders; they examine themes ranging from environmental justice to the culture of working people, from the rights of disabled Californians to the legacy of the Japanese American internment. The projects employ a wide variety of program formats, are sponsored by an equally diverse range of institutions, and engage the knowledge and wisdom of both academic- and community-based humanities advisors. Playing at the Smithsonian: Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone

The Council-supported documentary Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone—a film directed by Lev Anderson and Chris Metzler—will have its Washington, DC theatrical premiere this month, courtesy of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Everyday Sunshine is a documentary about the Black punk-funk-rock-ska band Fishbone, genre- and expectation-defying musical pioneers from the streets of South Central LA who rose to prominence amid the competitive Hollywood music scene of the 1980s. Laurence Fishburne narrates the story of artists on a quest to reclaim their musical legacy while debunking myths of young Black men from urban America. The film, which highlights the parallel journeys of a band and its city, includes interviews with musicians Gwen Stefani, Flea, Ice-T, Perry Farrell, and Branford Marsalis.
