[CW-Grad] Fwd: Nominations for TAships in the University Writing Program for 2011-12

To clarify: the UWP (University Writing Program) is a separate program, in which TAs either teach an English 1 Composition class, or in a new expansion of the program, UWP TAs are now being offered jointly with other CHASS departments (Comp Lit, History, whatever) that have substantial writing components, and which can be counted instead toward satisfying the English 1C undergrad requirement.

Here are some links:

A number of our students, including Eric Montgomery now, have taught in this program. It looks to be more interesting with the new approach to integrating into other departments' courses.

Hi Robin,

A few of us were wondering if this is the same as or different than the MFA TAships for which we’re preparing to apply. It seems to me that by “writing program” it is referring to something else, but I thought I would inquire.

Best,
Jonathan

>> The University Writing Program is soliciting nominations of graduate students who might be considered for TA positions in the writing program. Nominees for TA support from the UWP must be eligible for TA support according to Graduate Division regulations.
>>
>> Although our projections for the 2011-2012 academic year are uncertain, we are assembling a rank-list of applicants in case openings develop. Please nominate only your most accomplished candidate(s). Nominees must be excellent writers, preferably with teaching experience. They should have a high aptitude for working with freshmen and sophomores. Once nominated, they should send us a ten-page writing sample, a letter of application, a vita, and any available student evaluations. A letter of recommendation from a faculty member who knows about their teaching would be helpful as well, though it is not a requirement. This spring we will arrange with the nominees a time for them to take a quiz of their basic knowledge of English grammar and usage. There might also be an information session so that potential applicants can find out more about the responsibilities associated with these positions before they apply. As UWP Director, I will interview finalists. All TA-ships are for instruction in the writing program under the supervision of the faculty-in-charge. TAs must participate in the five-day fall orientation, enroll in English 301 and 302 their first quarter and then 302 for the rest of the year. The appointments are normally for one year with the possibility of renewal.
>>
>> We urge you to nominate your best few candidates. It is possible to re-nominate graduate students currently serving as UWP TAs. If you have nominations, please send them to Cheryl Brusuelas, c/o the University Writing Program, 1003 HMNSS (X27730,cheryl.brusuelas at ucr.edu <mailto:cheryl.brusuelas at ucr.edu> ), by Monday, April 4th. We will contact the nominees and request that they apply. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
