Simon Winchester is an author, journalist and broadcaster of enviable range. Time magazine calls him “an extraordinarily graceful writer.” His many books include the best-selling The Professor and the Madman, A Crack in the Edge of the World, and The Map that Changed the World. Winchester was made Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006.

With ATLANTIC: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discovers, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories, he returns to his trademark blend of history, natural science, and keen observations with a fascinating “biography” of one of the world’s great oceans. Winchester delves deeply into the long, complicated story of a body of water that has been at the center of western civilization.

Patt Morrison is host of The Patt Morrison Show on KPCC and a longtime reporter and columnist for the Los Angeles Times. She is a regular commentator on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and has published a best-selling book on the Los Angeles River.

Net proceeds from this event will benefit the new soon to be launched Los Angeles Review of Books. The collective project of 200 distinguished writers and scholars from Los Angeles and around the globe, The Los Angeles Review of Books is the first major book review to launch in the new century. Daily reviews and essays, streaming video and audio, podcasts and interactive salons, aggregated book news and book talk from around the web, digests of the best of the literary blogs and interviews and roundtables with writers, critics, publishers will, over time, develop into the world’s most comprehensive database of literary discussion. A nonprofit community service, The Los Angeles Review of Books is housed at UC Riverside’s College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and has received seed funding from UCR, the Rosenthal Family Foundation and individual donors. This endeavor is led by Tom Lutz, who recently was one of the LA Weekly's 100 Angelenos doing cool things.
