Harvey Pekar, the groundbreaking author of "American Splendor," who is largely credited with opening up the form to gritty realism and autobiography, and who worked with such illustrators as Robert Crumb and Kevin Brown, among others, has passed away. Pekar was the keynote speaker at UCR's Writers Week 2006.

If you haven't read "American Splendor," you should. Pekar's work has influenced not only the graphic novel, but memoir and approaches to regional literal in general.
