THE UC RIVERSIDE MELLON WORKSHOP on SCIENCE AND THE ARTS 2008-2009 presents:
SCIENCE AND THEATRE:
a neglected genre?
DR. CARL DJERASSI
Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Stanford
National Medal of Science, National Medal of Technology
Novelist, Playwright, Poet
Founder: Djerassi Resident Artists Program
Through his plays and novels, Djerassi has consistently explored the
convergence of science and literature. In his plays, he has often worked
with themes and plots that illustrate "science-in-theatre"- the human side
of science and the personal conflicts faced by scientists because of their
work.
In this talk and discussion-along with a reading of a few scenes from his
play Taboos -Dr. Djerassi will examine the relationship between the accurate
representation of science and the development of effective drama.
How best can theatre translate society's growing interest in scientific
developments?
