Dear All,

Because a lot of you have been asking, I'd like to update you on some upcoming
Gluck activities and fellowship opportunities.

John Medina, program coordinator of the Gluck program, said applications for
the 2007-2008 academic year will be available in mid or late May. He will notify
the department when the applications are ready. If you have further questions,
please contact John Medina in Arts 126 or by phone at (951) 827-3518. There
will be two graduate fellowships available.

In addition, there is one fellowship for the Gluck Summer Camp to be
held July 9-27. Below is a description of LAST YEAR's summer camp so you'll
have an idea of the program. I've also added a description of what Ky-Phong
Tran did for last summer's camp to give you an idea of the possibilities.

If you are interested in the summer camp fellowship, please e-mail me a brief
(one to two-page) statement detailing any teaching experience you've had,
along with a description of the camp course you propose. Please e-mail me as
soon as possible and no later than Thursday, March 29.

Lastly the Creative Writing department will be participating in the Spring Gluck
Day of Arts on April 13. Four elementary schools around the area will be on
campus participating in workshops and presentations. Christine Kitano has been
selected to participate this year's Day of Arts, which is sure to be as successful
as last year's.

Very best,
Dana

GLUCK SUMMER CAMP DESCRIPTION:

The Gluck Program of the Arts are inviting high schools students to
participate in a 2-week long educational outreach event called "Gluck
Summer Camp for the Arts" on the campus of UC Riverside, from July 3
to July 14.

The Summer Camp will include workshops, presentations, and lectures
by graduate Gluck Fellows in Creative Writing, Dance, Music, Art, Art
History, and Theatre.

The Summer Camp will be designed to give high school students an
intensive educational experience on the arts, and expand their
understanding of the history, theory and application of the various
arts disciplines. This educational outreach will serve as a bridge
for high school students thinking about, and/or interested in,
pursuing the arts in college. The Summer Camp will also serve to
introduce high school students to university-level settings. It is
the hope of the Gluck Program at UC Riverside to reach out to this
under-served community as they transition from teens to young adults,
and to inspire their creative minds and spirits through the arts.

The Summer Camp will also include field trip to the UCR Botanical
Gardens, the Riverside Metropolitan Museum, the Riverside Art Museum,
the Sweeney Art Gallery, and the UCR/California Museum of
Photography, and other locations in and around Riverside.

The Summer Camp will utilize spaces and studios in the ARTS Building
at UC Riverside.

The Summer Camp is at no cost to participants. Lunch will be
provided to students, but transportation to and from UCR will be
arranged by individual participants.

Participants will be able to choose from the different workshops, and
may take one or multiple workshops.

Creative Writing: Storytelling and Creation Myths
Gluck Fellow: Ky-Phong Paul Tran
The Creative Writing workshop is about stories: How to tell them? Who can tell
them? Why are stories important? In the first week, students will examine and
write Creation Myths using murals influenced by hieroglyphics, petroglyphs, and
other ancient writings. In the second week, students will look at communities,
telling a graphic story using photographs. In the last week, students will
explore their futures, and learn about traditional creative writing forms like
poetry, fiction, and theater.
