Sign the NBCC Petition - Support The AJC Book Review!

PEN USA asks all book lovers to take a moment to read the following words,
click the link and sign the petition.

"Following the events of last week, the NBCC, the National Book Critics
Circle, has started an online petition to protest the Atlanta Journal
Constitution's decision to eliminate its book editor job (and with it
Teresa Weaver).

In just over a day, the petition has picked up 300 signatures, including
dozens of writers -- a slew of * major * crime novelists - Michael
Connelly, Denis Lehane, James Lee Burke, Karin Slaughter - as well as
Southern literary eminences, like Allan Gurganus and Clyde Edgerton. Here's
the link.

<http://www.petitiononline.com/atl2007/petition.html%20>

The petition is part of a whole campaign the NBCC launched this morning on
our blog, Critical Mass, which features an original piece by George
Saunders, an interview with David Ulin, of the L.A. Times Book Review, as
well as some commentary:

Would you please consider signing this petition and forwarding it to people
you might think care? (As in, your writers, [and]... to friends and
family?)

Also, would you ask some of your writers to participate? We're still
looking for short commentary to put on our blog or for people to write in
to their newspapers.

I think if we can up with many, many signatures this would get the AJC
executives' attention, and maybe beat back a trend which is spreading
across America with alarming speed.

Yrs,

John Freeman
