if I may chime in a side-note question, who on earth is the grad advisor right now? I would ask around to find out but don't have classes till Monday. English classes need to be spelled out in further detailed course descriptions by someone, otherwise you'll be in for quite an unexpected ride, and for seminars that require hardcore scholarship, all involved should be aware of the topics/readings.

Subject: Re: [Cwgrad-announcements] please help
Carly,
Thank you for saying that. I too have similar frustrations and often feel that
if I
don't find out 'insider information' (information which should be widely
available
but is not) from my friends who happen to be close friends with various
teachers, I have no idea what is going on. For example, for those of us
graduating in the spring, it is extremely vital and necessary for us to know
when
our professors are going on sabbatical, so that we can take thesis hours with
them while we can. Many of the professors are going on sabbatical this year,
and I have just recently learned that two of the professors on my thesis
comittee
will be on sabbatical this spring! This changes my entire schedule around, and
it
would have been helpful to know this information as soon as it was decided. I
don't particularly think it's the teachers job to inform the listserve when he
or
she is going on sabbatical (though it wouldn't take more than a matter of
seconds) but could SOMEONE please do it?
It seems as if there is either a person not doing his or her job or some person
who would or should handle these sorts of things simply missing from the
department. I too echo Carly's frustrations, and add to them that it almost
feels
at times as if one has to shmooz just to find out basic information so that one
can finish his or her thesis on time and get the correct and decent amount of
attention paid to his or her writing.
Kate
