The University of California, Riverside, has recently united its three
downtown arts presentation venues under the umbrella name of the
UCR/ARTSblock. The ARTSblock is composed of the UCR/California Museum of
Photography, The Sweeney Art Gallery, and the future (2008) Culver Center
for the Arts, a media lab and presentation facility. The three institutions
reside side by side in the heart of downtown Riverside's historic pedestrian
mall. 

The ARTSblock represents a collaborative endeavor between the city of
Riverside and the University of California at Riverside. Built on dialog and
interaction, the ARTSblock will help the continued revitalization of
downtown and bring ambitious art exhibits and events to Riverside and
Southern California. 

To showcase this new collaboration, UCR is in the process of establishing a
series of major artistic events that will signal to Riverside and Southern
California the excellence and energy of the university's arts and film
curriculum, its public galleries, and its cultural programs. 

As a prelude to the renovation of the historic Rouse Building into the
Culver Center, a small shed-like building next to Rouse, now housing the
Wurms Janitorial Supply Company, must be demolished. 

ARTSblock has commissioned artist Jason Middlebrook to undertake this
demolition project. Jason describes his project as follows:

Riverside Historic Downtown Main Street Mall: December 4 - December 16, 2006
Grand finale and bulldozing demolition: Saturday, December 16th, 7:30 pm An
ARTSblock Preview Event. Supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. 

Jason Middlebrook: Over the course of a two week period I will gut the Wurms
building of all it's raw and reusable materials. Each day demolition and
incisions will occur and material will be removed which will than be
designed and built into furniture. During the two week process the furniture
and objects will be displayed on the site. My goal is to save and reuse as
much of the building as possible. I will approach the building in a radical
matter, cutting, exposing and dividing. The name of the project, LIVE
BUILDING will be cut in gigantic letters into the parking lot side. The end
objective is to reduce the amount of debris that will eventually go into a
land fill. The usable parts of the building create new objects that
contribute to people's lives. Each object has a sustainable foundation. I
want people to see that the building and it's history was significant to the
site and to the community. It's memory will live on in the objects it
produces.
