The San Juan Workshops

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately.
-Henry David Thoreau

2006 Faculty:

Memoir: Philip Gerard, Lee Martin, Lee Gutkind
Fiction: Ron Carlson, Dani Shapiro, Pam Houston
Poetry: Mark Jarman, Stanley Plumly, Gary Short
Children's Literature: Donna Kooner Gines

The goal of the San Juan Workshops is to remove writers from the hectic pace
of everyday life and give them the inspiration, space, and quiet to attend
to their writing.

The Workshops are held for one week, each summer, in Ouray, Colorado-the
Switzerland of America. In this cozy mountain village, everything is within
walking-distance, including the Ouray Hot Springs Pool, Cascade Falls, the
local movie theater in the historical Wright Opera House, several fine
restaurants, lodging, and The Community Center where workshop events take
place.

We work hard in the daytime and participate in social activities in the
evening-picnicking in the mountains, soaking in the hot springs, listening
to blue grass music in the city park, and playing bingo at the Elks lodge.
Annual social events include the San Juan Workshop Bar Crawl, Jeep Mountain
Cookout, Silverton Dinner Trip, and Champagne Brunch. Free social events
include First Saturday picnic, Monday's brunch on publishing in literary
journals, and three faculty readings with receptions immediately following.

Session One: Generating New Material (July 22-23)

If you're suffering from writer's block or if you've recently finished one
project and can't quite start another, Session One will fire you up again.
Tuition will cover 8 hours of workshop time with instructors, and the
schedule allows for an additional 7 hours of independent writing
time-precious hours if you have difficulty making time for your writing
during your normal daily routine. When you leave this workshop, you'll have
completed several poems, or a scene or two, or even an entire prose piece.
And you'll have a notebook of ideas to work on when you get home. We'll
even supply the notebook!

Faculty: Philip Gerard (memoir), Ron Carlson (fiction), Mark Jarman (poetry)

Session Two: Craft and Critique (July 24-27)

If you'd like a renowned writer to read and critique your manuscript (up to
14 pages of prose; up to 3-4 poems), Session Two will provide the help
you're looking for. During this workshop, faculty will workshop the
participants' manuscripts. Additionally, faculty will discuss the techniques
of great contemporary writers and how these techniques can be incorporated
into the participants' original works. Tuition covers 15 hours of workshop
time with instructions and over 12 hours of independent writing time.

SPECIAL NOTE: You will be required to send a manuscript to be workshopped
by July 5. If we do not have the manuscript by that date, we cannot
guarantee that the faculty member will agree to critique it.

Faculty: Lee Martin (nonfiction), Dani Shapiro (fiction), Stanley Plumly
(poetry), Donna Cooner Gines (Children's Literature).

Session Three: Revising and Submitting for Publication (July 28-29)

If you can write first drafts but have difficulty polishing them and
sending them off for publication, Session Three will offer you specific
exercises to help you with the revision process. Whether you need to
heighten your narrative perspective, tinker with metaphor and symbol,
rewrite the opening, or find better closure, faculty will give you the tools
you need to revision your work. Tuition will cover 8 hours of workshop time
with faculty, and the schedule will provide over 6 hours of independent
writing time. Please bring a manuscript to revise while attending this
workshop.

Faculty: Lee Gutkind (nonfiction), Pam Houston (fiction), Gary Short
(poetry)

automatically considered for fellowship assistance.

There is also a 15% discount for locals-writers living in Ouray or Ridgway,
Colorado.

Meal Tickets/Breakfast

Before they purchase a meal ticket, lots of participants want to know if
faculty members will be eating the breakfast served at the Community Center.
Most of them do, but we can't guarantee that they will. You will be served
a hot breakfast, all of them with protein and fruit plus other warm items.
It will be difficult to find a restaurant in Ouray where you can eat this
type of breakfast for less than $8, but certainly if you're not a morning
person or you like nothing more than a scone and coffee, there are bakeries
in town where you can probably eat cheaper than $8.
