Randall Lewis Seminar Series - Thursday, February 3, 2011
Causes and Consequences of America's War on Immigrants
Over the past three decades, the United States has enacted an increasingly harsh set of policies directed at Latin American immigrants, especially those from Mexico, both documented and undocumented, says Douglas Massey, the Henry G. Bryant Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs at Princeton University.
Dr. Massey will speak on the “Causes and Consequences of America’s War on Immigrants” at the Thursday, Feb. 3 Randall Lewis Seminar Series. His talk will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room B, UCR Extension Building, 1200 University Ave. in Riverside. The free seminar is being co-sponsored by the Center for Sustainable Suburban Development and the Department of Sociology at UCR.
Dr. Massey will offer an explanation for the rising animus against immigrants, and trace the effects of the “Latino threat narrative” on public policies and how they have increasingly acted to “racialize” Latinos to produce a new American underclass.
Dr. Massey specializes in the sociology of immigration, and has written on the effect of residential segregation on the black underclass in the United States. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He is the current president of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and a member of the Committee on National Statistics of the National Research Council and the Immigration Advisory Board of the Russell Sage Foundation.
Seminar: Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011 - 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.,
