Habitat for Humanity: A Model for Tomorrow's Green Homes
What kinds of "green" building materials and energy-saving devices will be used in
tomorrow's homes or are available now for renovation projects? How affordable are these
materials, what rebates may be available, and how much energy savings can consumers
expect?
Using Habitat for Humanity Riverside's 11th Street House project as an example, Jon
Dougal (left), and Michael Bacich (right), will discuss the kinds of "green" materials now
available for new and renovation construction at the April 16 Randall Lewis Seminar
Series. The seminar will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room E, UCR Extension building,
1200 University Ave. in Riverside. (See MAP)
The 11th Street house is Habitat for Humanity Riverside's first affordable,
energy-efficient "green" home built in the city.
Features of the home include heating and cooling systems using about half the energy
of more conventional systems, LED lighting, solar tube skylights for natural lighting,
solar panels to produce electricity, an on-demand water heater, drought-tolerant
landscaping and a recycled water system to irrigate the yard. The house was completed and
given to a family in 2008.
Dougal is the Sustainability Director for Habitat for Humanity Riverside and is
active in several other "green" organizations, including the U.S. Green Building Council
and the Solar Council of the Inland Empire and the Sustainable Furniture Council. In
addition to teaching a class on green building at UCR Extension, Dougal is a writer and
publisher - involved in producing www.GreenLinkup.com, www.Talkfloor.com, and
GreenInsight, a newsletter for the www.GreenMotion.org website. The publications reach
300,000 subscribers in 21 countries.
Dedicated to green building, natural products, and sustainable living, the
eNewsLetters cover all emerging topics, technologies, processes, and techniques needed by
both professionals, government officials, agriculturalists, biofuel producers, and home
owners in addressing climate change.
