            About This Event:

How Southern California tackles the daunting task of meeting stricter federal and state emissions standards and reducing greenhouse gases is the focus of this conference by UCR’s Edward J. Blakely Center for Sustainable Suburban Development.

Despite significant progress in the last 30 years, there is growing evidence that air pollutants in Southern California – including particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) are exposing Southern California residents to potentially serious health risks. There also is overwhelming consensus that immediate attention needs to be taken to reduce greenhouse gases. California has taken a leadership position to address global climate change with AB 32, legislation to reduce greenhouse gases in California.

Future federal and state emission standards for reducing air pollutants will challenge leaders in government, business and industry, cost billions of dollars, and require new approaches to air quality planning in Southern California.
