Randall Lewis Seminar Series for June 19, 2008

What's Important To Riverside County Residents?

How do Riverside County residents feel about the economy and their quality of life? About their homes, neighborhoods, roadways and the region's burgeoning growth?

The results of a survey of Riverside County residents will be discussed at the June 19 Randall Lewis Seminar Series. The seminar, which is free, will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Chancellor's Conference Room, UV207, in University Village.

The Blakely Center commissioned the survey in collaboration with the Riverside County Demographic Research Center, the Western Riverside Council of Governments, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments and the County of Riverside Department of Transportation & Land Management Agency. Researchers at UCR's Survey Research Center conducted the telephone survey of more than 750 county residents between April 8 and May 14.

Martin Johnson, UCR Associate Professor of Political Science and Co-Director of the Survey Research Center, will lead discussion of the survey results at the seminar. The survey covers a wide range of topics, including the economy, housing, transportation, education, health care, public service and policy issues and political participation.

Dr. Johnson joined UCR in July 2002 after completing his Ph.D. in Political Science at Rice University in Houston. He has published more than 20 papers on American politics, public opinion, political behavior, and public policy. His current research focuses on political communication, media effects, how political reporters cover government, and public opinion-policy linkages. Dr. Johnson’s research is supported by the National Science Foundation and the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation.

Since 1999, he has helped develop, field, and analyze numerous public opinion surveys for policy makers, news organizations, and academic researchers, specializing in community-level surveys. His research has been recognized by the National Opinion Research Center and the State Politics and Policy Section of the American Political Science Association.

Dr. Johnson has a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Louisiana State University and worked for newspapers, political campaigns, and the Louisiana State Treasurer’s Office prior to his career as an academic researcher and teacher.

The June 19 seminar will be the last before the summer break. The Lewis Seminar Series will resume in September.

The seminar will begin at 5:30 p.m. at University Village, UV207. See map.
