Advancing Urban Systems Models in the 21st Century

The 1950s saw the emergence of Urban Systems Models (USM) that linked land use with residential and non-residential activities and the transportation system to develop forecasts for very small geographic areas such as census tracts, traffic analysis zones, and now even parcels. Urban System Models enable the examination of a broad range of issues that cannot be considered with standard demographic and economic forecasting tools, such as air quality, traffic congestion and travel pricing strategies.

Older generations of USM were criticized because they did not consider the economics of land markets. This omission was in large part due to the lack of data, the complexity of model calibration and implementation, and lack of expertise in many agencies. These barriers are now being overcome, and the new generation of USM is tightly integrated around a detailed spatial representation of land economics.

Dr. Jeff Tayman’s presentation will provide a brief history of USM, the general framework of integrated land use and transportation models, their application to policy and decision-making; and future directions of USM. He also will discuss the interregional commuting between San Diego and southwest Riverside County and other USM efforts in California.

Dr. Tayman retired last year as the Department Director of Technical Services for the San Diego Association of Governments. He is a specialist in demographic, economic, and statistical methods; the design and implementation of complex, large scale transportation, socioeconomic, and land use models; and the development of complex, integrated data systems for small geographic areas using innovative GIS and relational database technology. He has extensive experience working with elected officials and other stakeholders on policy matters affected by demographic and economic changes. He has made over 80 presentations at professional conferences, published several journal articles and co-authored State and Local Population Projections: Methodology and Analysis, considered a standard in the field.

He currently has a part time appointment in the Economics Department at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Tayman holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Florida State University and an undergraduate degree in anthropology from Florida Atlantic University.

A lively audience of elected officials, business people, city and county staff, environmentalists, members of community groups and those who simply want to explore topics affecting the future of their communities is anticipated.

The seminar will begin at 5:30 p.m. at University Village, UV207. See map.

The seminars are free of charge.
