*Join the Dept. of Music, November 1st-2nd, for the 2024 Encuentro de
Música Oaxaqueña en UCR: Raices y Ramas (Roots and Branches). *

This is a FREE bilingual two-day event that is OPEN to the public with:

* FREE parking, lunch, and extra goodies with registration

* Academic presentations by Indigenous Oaxacan practitioners and scholars
on musical traditions from across the geographical contexts of Oaxaca,
México, California, and North Carolina.

* A master class featuring a new composition by Mixteco composer Ruben
Luengas of Pasatono Orchestra with the collaboration of UCR Wind Ensemble
and Band Director Armando Dueñas

* Recording sessions showcasing contemporary compositions by women Oaxacan
composers and traditional Oaxacan funeral music, coinciding with Día de los
Muertos. Music Industry Prof. Bradley Butterworth and EARs Music students
are generously providing recording support.

* Bilingual panels on university admission and campus life for Indigenous
community members and local guests (thank you, Chicano Student Programs

 and several UCR CHASS partners)

* Closing with "Baile Oaxaqueño," an open-air community presentation and
dance showcasing newly learned and recorded music

*Academic Relevance: *This community-oriented event offers an opportunity
for interdisciplinary learning and cultural engagement that aligns with
various academic interests:

   - Music & Culture
   - Transnational and Migration Studies
   - Ethnic & Gender Studies
   - Indigenous Communities and Languages
   - Urban Place Making
   - Latin American Studies
   - Multilingual Studies and Bilingual Education
   - Music Education, Composition, and Pedagogy
