We’re a small, vibrant program located near the US-Mexico border in a fun,
livable, and affordable city. Please forward this email to anyone who is
looking for a good place to get their degree in creative writing. We'd also
be happy to email or speak with anyone who has questions about our program
or life in Las Cruces as a writer. Our deadline is February 21, though
extensions may be possible.
We offer a generous graduate assistantship, small classes and opportunities
to teach a variety of undergraduate classes including creative writing. A
three-year program, our MFA allows students to complete coursework in the
first two years, allowing a full year to develop a manuscript. Students
teach *only one class per semester* and have time to learn publishing and
outreach, diversifying their skill sets. *SInce our program is now a part
of the Creative Media Institute at NMSU, *students have increased
opportunities to build a degree that suits their creative goals. They can
work with screenwriters, television writers, and will have internship
opportunities in film production, festival management, and documentary
film. Check out our new location:
https://cmi.nmsu.edu/cmi/mfa-cw/creative-writing.html
Our former students have published over 30 books of poetry, fiction and
nonfiction, are produced playwrights, and have won awards including
the Drue Heinz Prize, Black Lawrence Prize, and Nelson Algren Story award
for Fiction. We’ve placed students as Fulbright scholars, Breadloaf
Fellows, and in Ph.D. programs.
We’d be delighted to have your creative friends apply to our flexible and
genre-rich MFA degree. Please suggest to any who are interested to reach
out to me (cvoisine at nmsu.edu), and I'll be more than happy to talk to them.
All the best,
Connie
