Juniper Summer Writing Institute: June 9-15, 2024
Dear Poets & Writers,

Apply to join us *June 9–15* for a week of wild invention at the Juniper
Summer Writing Institute! *February 15* is the deadline to apply for
general and scholarship applications. Be sure to check out all the funding
opportunities on our website if you would like to be considered for a
scholarship!

All descriptions of our faculty’s weeklong Workshops and elective Craft
Sessions being offered this summer can be found on our website
<https://t.e2ma.net/click/as083i/iyeaak/iii2px>.

Please allow us to spotlight two of our workshop faculty, both of whom have
long histories with Juniper. *Hilary Plum* is a graduate of the MFA Program
for Poets and Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where
Juniper takes place, and before that, she was a Juniper participant in 2007
when she took a fiction workshop with Noy Holland. She served as a guest
writer in 2017 when her book *Watchfires* had just launched. We’re thrilled
to have her back with us this summer to teach a workshop and craft
session. *Cleyvis
Natera*, a former student of Noy Holland and Juniper participant in 2018,
joined us as an Alumni-in-Residence last summer in the midst of her
nationwide book tour for her wildly successful debut novel, *Neruda on the
Park*. This summer she returns to teach both a weeklong workshop and craft
session. We are so excited to bring both of these luminary alumni back for
Juniper's 20th anniversary. Check out what they’re offering you this
summer!

*Hilary Plum*’s creative non-fiction workshop, *Writing as a Form of Care*,
will explore how care takes form in writing. Focusing on creative
nonfiction, memoir, and/or the essay, workshop participants will consider
how the essay’s relationship to forms of thought—thinking in progress—and
to research are modes of care. Her craft session, *Writing as Art, as Work,
as Labor*, will focus on time, work, and money in relation to writing. The
session will begin with a talk introducing relevant points, followed by
collective activities and discussion related to topics including
publication, day jobs, “the industry” and “the market,” freedom, and the
possibilities and struggles of the writing life.

*Cleyvis Natera*’s workshop, *The Art of the Story*, will allow writers to
learn craft elements such as perspective, setting, propulsion, and
characterization. Participants will spend time discussing craft elements as
well as crafting their own stories. Her craft session, *Writer as Activist,
Language as Revolution*, will provide an overview of how writing can be a
tool for social transformation and offer a framework to have fulfilling,
inspiring and meaningful writing careers.
