Tropical Cyclone Hilary
The City of Riverside Fire Department Office of Emergency Management (
http://www.readyriverside.org/) (OEM) is monitoring Tropical Cyclone
Hilary. Based on current forecasts from the National Hurricane (
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/) Center, Hilary is expected to impact Southern
California Saturday through Monday. Heavy rainfall of up to 3/4 inches per
hour is expected to move into our area with rains totaling 3 to 4 inches
through Monday. Street flooding and rises along rivers, and along roadways
are likely. Tropical storm force winds are also likely along the coast,
valleys and mountains. High winds can arrive as early as Sunday afternoon.
Residents are encouraged to take the time now to check their yard and
secure any loose items. Once heavy rain arrives, please stay indoors and
off the roads. Remember, only call 911 in an emergency.
A flash flood watch is in effect for all of Riverside County. If your home
floods, please stay home as this will be the safest place. If water rises,
do not go into your attic as you can be trapped and risk drowning.
Storm Preparation Tips:
✅Do not walk, swim or play in flood waters. Debris, wildlife, and other
dangers can cause serious injury or even death.
✅ Be prepared for wind. Secure loose items outdoors, including furniture.
✅ Be prepared for power outages. Charge devices now and have multiple ways
to get alerts and emergency information. NOAA Weather Radios are a great
option!
✅ If you experience a power outage, please call 311 to report it. Stay up
to date on outages at

✅ Be prepared for heavy rain and flash flooding. Clear drainage systems
(gutters, culverts, etc.) now, and plan to avoid areas prone to flooding.
Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
✅ Sign up for city alerts at RiversideAlert.com, County alerts at
RivCoReady.org/alert-rivco, and make sure Emergency Alerts on your phone
are enabled in the settings.
✅ Stay up-to-date on the changing weather. Follow NOAA NWS National
Hurricane Center and US National Weather Service San Diego California, and
bookmark https://www.weather.gov/sgx/ (https://www.weather.gov/sgx/) now
for the latest updates.
✅ Review your plans now. Have a plan to stay in place with all the supplies
you might need and a plan to evacuate if needed. Visit ReadyRiverside.org
to learn more about planning for emergencies.
✅ Don’t forget to plan for your pets and animals, and if you rely on
medical devices plan accordingly.
✅ If you have flood-prone areas, sandbags and sand are available. Find
those locations at
https://www.riversideca.gov/readyriverside/be-informed/hazards/flooding (
https://www.riversideca.gov/readyriverside/be-informed/hazards/flooding).
Storm Safety Tips:
🚩 If power goes out, plan to use flashlights or lanterns vs candles to
avoid the risk of fire.
🚩 Keep your devices charged in case the power goes out so you can still
receive alerts.
🚩 Turn Around, Don’t Drown. It doesn’t take much moving water to sweep a
vehicle away, and flood waters can hide roadway damage.
🚩 Avoid travel if possible and drive safely if you have to go out. Take
your time and err on the side of caution. Remember to drive with your
lights on in the rain to increase safety and visibility to others.
🚩 If you plan to use a generator or your vehicle, make sure you plan to
keep the toxic exhaust from entering your home. Generators should be
located 20 feet from a building while in operation and vehicles should be
run outside the garage with the exhaust pointed away from the building.
🚩 If you experience a power outage, please call 311 to report it. Stay up
to date on outages at
https://www.riversideca.gov/utilities/power-outage-information (
https://www.riversideca.gov/utilities/power-outage-information).
Monitor local media and other trusted sources for w
eather and other information often over the next several days.
If you must drive, slow down and leave additional space between you and
other vehicles.
NEVER
drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
Turn Around Don’t Drown
! Check the

in the region.
