Hi all,

The Provost has developed new procedures for the handling of retentions, which is attached.  One significant change to the procedure is the requirement for a vote of the faculty on whether retention attempt is warranted.  I’m uncomfortable with this requirement, as faculty who have an offer and want to enter into negotiations to be retained often wish to keep the information confidential.  Note that the vote is taken in the department and reported, but not shared with the candidate, and the vote is only on whether retention should be attempted, not on any aspect of the retention package.  I would like us to discuss this policy at our faculty meeting on Monday.

Dear Chairs,

Please find attached the finalized revision to the Senate faculty retention processes our campus will officially begin using as of now.  The Senate chair has recently shared this attached finalized document with all of the committees that commented on the proposed changes.  The finalized document reviews the motivation for the changes introduced, and also will show you the Senate committee commentsand how we responded to them . Of particular importance going forward will be the Flowcharts in Figure 1 and Figure 2 that describe the procedures for preemptive retentions and non-preemptive retentions, respectively.  Please discuss the procedures with your faculty colleagues at a department meeting.
