Dr. Guiterrez provided a brief abstract associated with her talk:

Phytoworlds: New(er) Histories of Plants, Peoples, and the Philippines

How does one communicate knowledge of a plant without uttering its name? How do plants yield distinct experiences of labor and leisure? How might plants be considered more central forces in the histories we write?

In this talk, “Kat” Cruz Gutierrez (History, University of California, Santa Cruz) will share her latest research projects on colonial botany in the Philippines, Filipino farm labor in California’s Pajaro Valley, and the Cold War plant sciences. Working with and beyond plants of subsistence and commerce, Gutierrez explores different approaches to writing histories of science and of the Philippines. Each approach highlights human-vegetal encounters and their significance to major periods in Philippine and Philippine-diasporic history. Key to these are the insights of current plant researchers, whose perspectives are essential to meaningful humanistic writing on plants.
