Hi all,
See below regarding a process for requesting funds to cover salary shortfall resulting from the salary increases. The Provost is only committing $1M, which I’m afraid won’t go very far. Before submitting a request, please contact your funding agency to determine if supplemental funds might be available, and work with your analyst to determine how much budget flexibility you have. We will need to demonstrate there is no other funding that can cover the shortfall before making the request, so don’t assume this will automatically be approved.

Requests need to be submitted to CNAS by March 31. To give us time to review them, submit your requests to me by Friday March 24.

Hello CNAS Chairs, Directors & FAOs –

As you know, the Provost announced that the campus has established a $1M reserve to support graduate students & postdocs funded on grants. Since the initial announcement in February, she has confirmed her intent to support graduate students throughout the lifetime of the grant. Further, she has specific instructions for the application process to ensure that requests made across campus are fair and equitable.

Based on her feedback, PI requests must first be made to the Chair, vetted, and forwarded to the Dean’s Office. Each request to the Provost must be accompanied by 3 narratives (PI, Chair, Dean) providing explanation and context for the request. For the Dean to evaluate CNAS requests, we ask that each unit coordinate their proposals such that we receive one document consolidating all requests for a single department. Your requests should contain a matrix in Excel as follows:

PI Requestor
Amount Requested
Name of Student or PostDoc Supported
Department Contribution
PI Narrative
Dept Chair Narrative
Dean's Narrative

The PI narrative may include an explanation as to why grant rebalancing and/or use of other funding sources are not sufficient, and the Chair narrative should include information on the criteria to determine the amount of the Department contribution. The narratives may include relative percentage of GSRs to TAs, history of student support, other mechanisms to support (e.g., CFD),

To meet the provost’s timeline of April 15, the Dean’s Budget Advisory Committee (DBAC) will evaluate all CNAS requests on April 3 (Monday). Please submit your documents to Len Pavlov by EOB Friday, March 31 (Friday) so that we can compile and complete the vetting process. Departments will be apprised of the decisions following the DBAC meeting.

Thanks,
Jennifer
