Good Evening CITL Members,

We are in the process of getting final approval to send out the below message to all of campus. ITS wanted to make you aware before we send it. We also wanted to make you aware that the campus is experiencing a targeted attack of malicious phishing emails that are written to look as if they are coming from “reghelpdesk at ucr.edu<mailto:reghelpdesk at ucr.edu>”, other Student Services departments on campus, and/or individual campus users. The key message is to be aware of these emails, and to report them and delete them if they receive the malicious email.

Thank you,

Subject: Security Alert: Notice of Phishing Campaign Targeting UCR

Dear Highlander Community,

Please be advised that ITS has received reports of malicious phishing emails that are written to look as if they are coming from “reghelpdesk at ucr.edu<mailto:reghelpdesk at ucr.edu>”, other Student Services departments on campus, and/or individual campus users.

The subject of the email will look like it is a reply to an email (i.e., the subject line begins with Re: or RE: ).

The body of the email will contain a hyperlink with the text "DOCUMENT DOWNLOAD LINK" that directs the user to a zip file download or other Microsoft Office document. This file contains malware and should not be downloaded or opened.

DO NOT click on any links in suspicious emails. All users are advised to forward suspicious emails to the ITS abuse email account. For step-by-step guidance on how to do this, please visit the IT Knowledge Base at kb.ucr.edu and enter "Email Phishing: How to notify the UCR Information Security Office" in the search bar.

As always, ITS encourages you to remain vigilant and follow cybersecurity best practices when learning and working online. For additional resources on how to handle future suspicious emails, please refer to information security guidance on the ITS website at its.ucr.edu/cybersmart.

Enabling Your Continued Success,

Best,
