Hi there friends & AHS faculty:

I am pleased to share the info below for an online event I'm hosting in a
few weeks on AI and the humanities -- something I think all of us are
grappling with in one way or another. Please share widely amongst your own
friends and networks, and please tune in with us Friday, October 23rd!

Thanks so much, and all best wishes,

Becky

What: *AI and the Future of the Humanities: A SSEMWG Conversation on the
Use and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Scholarly Research and Museum
Learning*

*Who:* Dr. Aaron Larsen – Assistant Professor of History at Mount Allison
University in New Brunswick and former Postdoctoral Associate Member at the
University of Oxford

Laura Deluca – PhD student in the Department of English at Carnegie Mellon
University in Pittsburg

Becky Teague – (host) PhD student at the University of California,
Riverside & Early Career Researcher for the Society for the Study of Early
Modern Women and Gender (SSEMWG)

*Description:* AI is one of the fastest growing (and most lucrative) new
areas of our digital landscape. With its unique capabilities to not only
imitate human thinking but, in some cases, to *generate* it, large language
models (LLMS) are rapidly being adopted across the corporate and commercial
sectors. But what about within academia, and what does this new technology
mean for the future of the humanities – a field constantly intent on
interrogating what it means to be *human* in the world? How ethical is AI’s
use in teaching and learning environments, like the classroom or the
museum? Where is the line between its appropriate deployment as a research
tool and its inappropriate use as an independent generator of new
scholarship? Perhaps most concerningly, how does it affect work on already
underrepresented populations, such as women and minorities? This
conversation brings together Dr. Aaron Larsen, Assistant Professor of
History at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick and Laura Deluca, PhD
student in the Department of English at Carnegie Mellon University in
Pittsburg to reflect on this topic via a discussion of their own work with
AI. Please come join us! All are welcome!

*When:* *Friday, October 23rd at 12pm PST / 3pm EST / 4pm ADT*

*Where:* The conversation will be hosted via *Zoom. Please use the link to
