</span></b><a href="https://pages.nyu.edu/birnbaum/"><b><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#1155CC">Ken Birnbaum</span></b></a><b><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">, Professor of Biology and Acting
Director of the Genome and Systems Biology Center at New York University. </span>
</b><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Dr. Birnbaum artfully combines traditional and modern technologies – single-cell, imaging and computation – to understand processes of root development and regeneration in Arabidopsis and maize.
As postdoc with Philip Benfey, Ken developed the use of fluorescent activated cell sorting to define mRNA transcripts in specific types of root cells. This propelled the discovery in developmental, gene regulation and metabolomics of specific cell types.
Ken co-leads a NSF Research Coordination Network, the </span><a href="https://www.plantcellatlas.org/"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#1155CC">Plant Cell Atlas Community</span></a><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">
that facilitates community innovation to adoption of single cell and spatial ‘omic methods. </span><o:p></o:p></p>

<b>December 13th</b> event will also <b>spotlight some of the creative research and outreach activities of our community, including collaborative research and activities of the Plants3D NRT training program</b>. The s</span>peakers will include postdocs and
PhD students.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:10.0pt"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Awards to an undergraduate, graduate student and postdoc will be made based on nominations from CEPCEB PIs.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
