Investigating plant responses to climate change with image-based phenotyping

Abstract: Rising global temperatures threaten food security and crop productivity as plants struggle to grow in environmental stress conditions. Maize is often grown without irrigation, resulting in heat and drought stress that together account for 15 to 20% of crop loss worldwide. Here, we use high-throughput phenotyping and image analysis to evaluate maize plants under environmental stress. Using open-source image-analysis platform PlantCV, we use computer vision to measure plant growth and stress responses. These tools have enabled the identification of stress tolerant maize varieties and functional explanations for maize stress tolerance and susceptibility.
